Dell 03VHY3 3.84TB 24G SAS SED Enterprise SSD (KPM6WRUG3T84)
The 03VHY3 3.84TB is a Dell-qualified enterprise SSD from the Kioxia PM6-R family, combining a 24G SAS (SAS-4) interface with built-in self-encryption. It is built for two things at once: feeding high-throughput tiers with double the link bandwidth of 12G SAS, and keeping data at rest encrypted in hardware without a performance penalty.

24G SAS: Double the Link Bandwidth
24G SAS, also called SAS-4, doubles per-lane throughput compared with 12G SAS and keeps the dual-port, full-duplex design that made SAS the default in enterprise storage. In practice, that extra headroom matters in dense all-flash arrays where a single backplane serves many drives at once, and in workloads that push large sequential transfers rather than small random reads.
One compatibility note: 24G SAS drives are backward compatible with 12G SAS backplanes and will negotiate down to 12G speeds, but you only get full 24G throughput with a 24G-capable controller and backplane. Check your PERC and chassis generation before buying if bandwidth is the reason you are upgrading.
SED: Encryption Without the Performance Cost
A self-encrypting drive (SED) encrypts data inside the drive’s own controller as it is written, so the host CPU does no encryption work and there is no measurable throughput penalty. Two practical benefits follow: meet data-at-rest encryption requirements without host-based software encryption, and decommission drives with a cryptographic erase — the key is destroyed, rendering the media unreadable in seconds instead of hours of overwriting.
Important: SED encryption only becomes active when the drive is managed by a key manager or the array’s local key management. An unmanaged SED behaves like a normal drive. Confirm your controller and management stack support SED key management before relying on encryption.
Read-Intensive Performance for High-Speed Tiers
This is a read-intensive model, tuned for workloads dominated by reads: content delivery, analytics scans, VDI boot traffic, and warm data tiers. It delivers consistent low latency and high random-read IOPS, while write endurance is rated for the lighter write pattern such drives are designed for. For write-heavy databases, choose a mixed-use or write-intensive model instead.
Ideal Applications
- All-flash arrays needing maximum link bandwidth per slot
- Compliance-driven environments requiring data-at-rest encryption
- Analytics, reporting, and content delivery tiers
- Secure decommissioning and drive retirement programs
